Defeat Migraine with Acupressure

Updated: Jan 16, 2021

Migraine, a disabling disorder

Migraine is a severe, recurring, painful one-sided intense headache that can last for hours or even days. This episodic disorder is associated with gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or diarrhoea. Other symptoms include photophobia, phonophobia, blurry vision and sweating.

The World Health Organization considers migraine as a disabling neurological disorder that is the 19th leading cause of years lived with disability among both males and females of all ages, and as the 12th leading cause of years lived with disability among females of all ages.

According to American Migraine Association, 12% of the United States population suffers from migraine; while in Europe it is 14% of the population. In India, the prevalence of migraine is similar to that reported in the studies mentioned above. However, in China only 1% of the population has migraine and 4.7% in Hong Kong. That is due to the fact that they use Acupressure as migraine prophylaxis.

Amazing Results

Some recent researches at Turin University, Italy, have shown that migraine patients who underwent  Acupressure treatment reduced their symptoms. Patients reported having at least 50% reduction in the nausea score, one of the most invalidating symptom associated with migraine attacks.

A research published in Canadian Medical Association Journal explains that patients who received Acupressure treatment for 20 weeks reported fewer days with migraine during weeks 5-8. Moreover, there was a significant reduction in the number of days with migraine during weeks 13-16.

A German randomized controlled trial at Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, has proven that Acupressure reduces migraine frequency significantly more than drug prophylaxis after treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine proved that stimulating some points either using needles (Acupuncture) or the fingers (Acupressure) is effective not only to reduce the nausea symptom but also the frequency and intensity of migraine episodes. As migraine is a chronic condition, it is important for patients to know that Acupressure can be considered a treatment option.
