Japanese Reiki and Western-style Reiki have their own different and significant characteristics. As mentioned in the post in which the True History of Reiki was explained, (https://www.healindiatherapies.com/post/the-true-history-of-reiki) we can find a Japanese Lineage of Reiki conformed by the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho (the discipline founded by Mikao Usui Sensei in 1922) that is taught in the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Gakkai in Japan only to Japanese people, and the Gendai Reiki Ho (the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho for modern day people founded by Hiroshi Doi Sensei, Shihan member of the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Gakkai) that can be taught to non-Japanese people. And we have a Western Lineage of Reiki.
The Usui Reiki Ryo-ho founded by Mikao Usui Sensei was modified by Chujiro Hayashi Sensei who left the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Gakkai and founded the Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu-kai and conferred Shinpi-den status to Hawayo Takata Sensei, who later modified what Hayashi has taught her and founded the Western-style Reiki that was spread in Hawaii first and then in US and rest of the world. After Takata Sensei died, in 1981 her granddaughter Phyllis Furumoto founded Usui Shiki Ryoho, the only Western-style Reiki that keeps the lineage of Takata Sensei.
Unfortunately, many Western-style Reiki Masters started modifying the Reiki techniques, they introduced new symbols, included more levels and changed completely the aims and characteristics of Usui Reiki Ryo-ho. These new systems don’t have lineage at all, even though they claim to be “Usui”, they don’t follow the teachings of Mikao Usui Sensei nor Hawayo Takata Sensei, in fact, they dishonour both Lineages (Japanese and Western). That is why many of these Free-style “Reiki” systems don’t provide a certificate with a proper lineage, or, when the lineage is mentioned, the Master is far far away from the origin of the lineage. One may wonder whether these “Money Reiki”, “Radar Reiki”, “Agape Reiki”, “Antidepression Reiki”, “Karmic Reiki”, “Menopause Reiki”, “Location Reiki”, “Violet Flame Reiki”, “Lion Reiki”, “White Dragon Reiki”, “Angel Reiki”, “Egyptian Reiki”, “Dolphin Reiki”, “Atlantean Reiki”, “Diamond Reiki”, “Crystaline Reiki”, “DNA Reiki”, “Past Life Reiki”, “Birth Trauma Reiki”, “Kundalini Reiki” and all these “Whatever Reiki” that are created every week should be called “Reiki” or not. Being a Gendai Reiki Ho Shihan 5th in Lineage, my opinion is that all these Free-style systems shouldn’t call themselves “Reiki”, because the energy the channelize is not what Mikao Usui Sensei channelized and taught.
Let’s explain this. Mikao Usui Sensei developed a way of transmitting Reiki that in English is translated as “Attunement”. Mikao Usui Sensei at the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Gakkai attuned his students in Reiki IN PHYSICAL PRESENCE. During the four years in which Usui Sensei accomplished his mission in life (Anshin Ritsumei) he attuned more than 2,000 students in physical presence and of these students, only 21 were conferred the status of Shihan (the highest degree). All the attunements performed by Mikao Usui Sensei were in physical presence, the teachings of Mikao Usui Sensei regarding the attunements are that they must be performed in physical presence. All the Shihans of the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Gakkai, after Usui Sensei’s death continued with his teachings of Reiju in physical presence. All the Shihans of Gendai Reiki Ho (the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho for modern day people) continue with Usui Sensei’s teachings of attunements in physical presence. Even all the Reiki Masters of the Western Lineage, the Usui Shiki Ryoho, continue with Usui’s teachings of Attunement in physical presence. This warrants the correct alignment with the energy of the Great Universe. The three lineage bearer schools of Reiki (Japanese: Usui Reiki Ryo-ho and Gendai Reiki Ho; the Western-style: Usui Shiki Ryoho) continue with the tradition of attunements in physical presence despite the pandemic. That is to say that attunements were postponed when social meetings were banned till the moment gatherings were allowed. None of the Shihans/Masters who belongs to the lineage bearer schools attuned online/through whatsapp/video call or any other means that were not in physical presence. Why do I explain this? Because for the lineage bearer schools, keeping Mikao Usui Sensei’s purity of energy is important. Most of these Free-style “Reiki” systems “teach” online or through a PDF or a whatsapp message. You may understand that these teachings don’t follow Usui’s tradition. We don’t know if there’s any alignment to the energy of the Great Universe at all, because the attunement is not performed. We don’t know what kind of energy the students are able to channelize. For sure, it’s not Reiki. To channelize Reiki you must be attuned. Moreover, to channelize the real Reiki, the frequency of energy that Mikao Usui Sensei’s has channelized, you must be attuned by a Shihan/Master of the lineage bearer schools. Being attuned by a Gendai Reiki Ho Shihan (if you want to learn the Traditional Japanese Reiki) or by a Usui Shiki Ryoho Master (if you want to learn the Western-style Reiki) will make you resonate with the frequency of the High Dimension that Usui Sensei was able to channelize. You will be resonating in that frequency, the frequency of Love, Harmony, and Health. Only a pure Lineage warrants you to be resonating with pure energy.
How do you know if your Shihan/Master belongs to the Lineage? After your Attunement, your Shihan/Master must give you a certificate in which your Lineage is mentioned. Check how far your Shihan/Master is in succession from Mikao Usui Sensei; the closer, the purer energy you’ll be able to channelize. How do you know if the certificate you are receiving has a fake lineage or not? If it is a Gendai Reiki Ho Shihan, you can check if the Shihan belongs to the Gendai Reiki Healing Association or the Gendai Reiki Network. If it is a Usui Shiki Ryoho Master, you can check at the Reiki Alliance. Another hint you will find is that neither Gendai Reiki Ho nor Usui Shiki Ryoho will offer their Attunements for cheap. You won’t get attunements at USD 5 or for free, as the Free-style systems advertise. You will get a pure Lineage so you’ll pay accordingly (eg: USD 250 on average for the Sho-den/First Degree).
Nowadays, there’s a fake lineage that claims to be Usui Reiki Ryo-ho. They call themselves “Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Masters”. The creator of this hoax says he received attunement from a Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Gakkai Shihan when he visited Japan. It is a must to clarify this. First of all, the Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Gakkai keeps its doors closed to almost everyone, only Japanese people can apply to be a member of the Gakkai to learn Usui Reiki Ryo-ho. Whosoever Western person says he/she has been attuned at the Gakkai or by a Gakkai Shihan is lying. Secondly, the status conferred by the Gakkai is “Shihan” not “Master”. A “Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Master” doesn’t exist. Whosoever Western person says he/she is a “Usui Reiki Ryo-ho Master” has been cheated directly or indirectly by this deceiver. In third place, these “masters” are offering attunements online. As I have been explaining, the true Lineages only attune in physical presence. Last, their fees are derisory, almost as cheap as the Free-style systems. If you have been a victim of this man and his fraudulent system, please, contact the Gendai Reiki Network.
Be aware and don’t be trapped. Always check the Lineage authenticity.
